Centre for Excellence in Agri-tech Innovation

Centre for Excellence – Agri-tech Innovation Centre is a collaborative effort between Karnataka Innovation and Technology Society (KITS), Department of IT, BT and S&T, Govt. of Karnataka, Department of Agriculture, Government of Karnataka and Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP) to promote innovation by attracting various technologies for finding answers to the prevailing and looming problems in Agriculture. The centre will promote deep-science/technology driven entrepreneurship in the agri sector, leading to innovation, economic development and job creation in the agricultural domain.

C-CAMP is well-positioned to harness its vast expertise in supporting innovation & entrepreneurship over the last few years and leverage its relations with University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru (UAS-B) to encourage & nurture promising innovations in the Agri-sector. In addition to this core collaboration with UAS -B, C-CAMP will work with other state agriculture and horticulture universities in Bagalkot, Dharwad, Raichur, Shivamogga, etc., as well as Incubation Centres in Bengaluru (Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre) and Mysuru (Nutra-phytopharmaceutical Incubation Centre) and other cities to build a hub-and-spoke model for promoting cutting-edge innovations in Agriculture and Agri-related sectors including crop production, drought issues, pesticide issues, animal husbandry, sericulture, etc.

OBJECTIVES:

  • – Identify key gaps in through an Immersion program in different regions in the country.
  • – Attract innovators to address these gaps through Grand Challenges Program
  • – Nurture the innovators & start-ups through Incubation, Funding and Mentorship

ACTIVITIES:

National Agri Immersion Program – 10-20 fellows identified and country-wide field immersion undertaken. 100-200 curated agri pain points identified. Review by an expert Committee. 5-10 well-curated agri problems considered for call for Grand Challenge Program. Grand Challenges Program – to identify key problems in Indian agriculture and bring about transformational change in this sector by addressing these issues with science-driven innovation. 15-30 winners selected and each of them will be funded to the tune of 25-50 lakhs, in exchange for fixed percentage of equity. The winners will be incubated within the centre and will be provided with not only equipment & infrastructure, but mentorship and handholding for a period of 18-24 months. Several workshops, seminars and networking events will be held for the incubatees. The centre will connect the incubatees with investors, industry partners etc for scale-up, manufacturing, and commercialization of their technologies.

C-CAMP aims to identify and support at least 8-10 path-breaking innovations with national impact in the agriculture field and facilitate the validation and deployment of these innovations.

Funding:

GOK funding of Centre for Excellence Agri-Innovation is 15.00 Crores over 5 years distributed 75:25 % between the Departments of Agriculture and Department of IT BT and S&T, respectively.
